Mariner 4 got the first close up pictures of Mars. It was made by the United States Of America. After a 228 day flight it passed Mars on July 14, 1965. While it was there it took 22 pictures of the surface. They only covered about 1% of Mars. It was a vast, barren wasteland. It had craters spread out. After it had passed Mars It orbited the sun once and headed back to Earth. Mariner 3 was launched 3 weeks before Mariner 4 but was lost. Mariner 4 used cold gas thrusters to be propelled. It had 4 solar panels that were pointed toured the sun for power.
