French Fur Trade

1701

The French controlled the fur trade in North America from 1600 to 1760. The fur was mainly supplied by Indian traders of the Huron and Ottawa tribes in the Great Lake area. Antoine de Lamothe Cadillac, with his lieutenant Alphonse de Tonty started a trading post on the Detroit River which they named Fort Pontchartrain. It is the present site of Detroit, where Cadillac cars are made. In 1715 the French started Fort Michilimackinac near present day Mackinac City, which was important to protect the French fur traders. The French control was ended by the French and Indian war against the British.
