The Persian Gulf War Operation "Desert Storm" 1991 |
|
Saddam Hussien had taken control of Iraq in 1979. Hussien wished to make his country whole once more, so he invaded Kuwait and taken it over in under four hours. He also controlled 24% of the world's oil supplies. It was thought to be that Hussien's next target would be Saudi Arabia. That was when the United States had entered, since Saudi Arabia called for protection. There was a deadline of January 15, 1991, for all of the Iraq forces to leave Kuwait, but Hussien ignored it. Desert Storm was brought up because of that, it was an attack to free Kuwait. Two air-force bombers, from the U.S., dropped 5,000 pound bombs at an attempt to kill Saddam Hussien, on the last night of the war. King Fahd invited the U.S. troops to Saudi Arabia to defend his monarchy from the Iraqi invasion. Iraq began stopping its Republic Gaurd divisions from Kuwait. Baghdad was bombed on January 17, 1991. Agents, from the U.S. put in a computer virus for Iraq's milatary. They wanted to disable the air-defense system of Baghdad. Compared to the Pentagon, had a lot less soldiers. 148 American servicemen and women were killed in the battlefield. When munitions blew up, eleven more people were killed.
