Civil War Begins

The Civil War is one of the subjects that people are most interested in. The cause of the war was slavery. It happened from 1861 - 1865, longer than the people expected it to. The northern states didn't want slavery, but the southern states did. The northern states were called "Yankees" and the southern states, "Confederates". The Civil War took place in the United States. The result of the war was that we have 50 states in the U. S. A, not two countries with less states, and we have no slavery in the U.S.A as it's against the law.

The Yankees wanted to end slavery and live an equal, and normal way of life. However, the Confederates wanted to keep slavery and live an agricultural way of life. More reasons that the war took place was, the difference in the economies, ideals, and ways of life. also, disputes between the federal governments, and the powers the states possessed. The Civil War was also known as the War Between the states, and the War of Secession.

Back then there were only 19 states that wanted no slavery and 15 that did want it. When the war happened, about 22 million people lived in the northern parts and about 9 million people lived in the southern parts. Plus about 13 1/2 million slaves in the southern parts. Around 4 million people from the north fought, and about 1 million people fought from the south. The northern people started using blacks as soldiers in 1863, but the south didn't use them until the end of the war. In some families, sometimes brother fought against brother. Finally in the end, the ragged confederate army surrendered.
