Oregon Becomes a State

1846

As Oregon's population grew more and more people wanted Oregon to become a state. Also when James K. Polk was elected in 1844 he promised he would make Oregon a state. So the U.S.A asked the British. They didn't want to but they didn't want to go to war either.

The two countries talked it over, and decided on having the border between the U.S.A and Canada. Then in 1858 Oregon, the Beaver State, became the 33rd state.
