Louisiana, a big region
in North America, was bought by the United States from France
in 1803. Back in 1803 Louisiana took up the area of present-day
Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota (West of the Mississippi River),
North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, part of
Montana, Wyoming, Colorado (East of the Rocky Mts.) and Louisiana
(West of the Mississippi River but including the city of New Orleans).
The huge state or the French word "province" was settled
by France in the early 18th century. At first the French refused
to sell Louisiana until the British looked liked they didn't want
to pay but to fight for Louisiana. France and Britain had fought
many times before and the French did not want to battle again.
However if they did not sell Louisiana the French thought that
the British and Americans would attack them. They had no choice.
They didn't want to fight with the British so they sold Louisiana
to America. The price was agreed on 15,000,000 dollars.
