According to a movie Baum made the Tinwoodman as one of the main characters. He thought up the The Tinwoodman when he was telling niece Dorothy a story. The Tinwoodman joins Dorothy's journey to OZ to get a heart because he doesn't have one. Dorothy and the Scarecrow find him rusted in the forest. They help him by getting the oil can in his house. The Tinwoodman is kind. He doesn't like hurting many things but he will if he has to. He cares about other people, like Dorothy. He's caring, brave, thankful, and never tired. He is thankful when Dorothy unrusted him. He bravely battles the moving trees. He also watches out for Dorothy when she goes to sleep.
