Interpretations, Questionnaire #1

FEELINGS

Team members felt good about themselves because of their parents' support, their own academic performance, that they are athletic, and just because of the way they are. They knew they were special because they were their own person, they could do things no one else could, because they were a good friend, they are good at sports, and one member said, "Because I overcame a big dog bite." The team knew what a put-up was and the effects of put-downs on their self-esteem and the self-esteem of others. Things the team is good at are sports, reading, computers, gymnastics, writing, and working with people and animals. The team values pets, family, friends, their parents, their teachers, and sports.

KNOWLEDGE

The team realizes that put-downs make a person feel worthless, cause you to think about the negative remarks ten times more than one put-up, can make a person feel depressed and afraid to talk out. In order to express anger without hurting themselves and others, one team member said, "They hit their head against things so their heart doesn't hurt." Other responses included hit the bed, count to ten and walk away, tell the teacher, put head under the pillow, hold myself down so I don't explode, and try to think of better things. The professional therapist suggested they hit their bed or a soft pillow so they don't hurt themselves. Responses to how to be a good friend included: you should believe in your friend, you should trust them, and you should stand up for your friend. The qualities the team looks for in a friend are that the friend is nice, can be trusted, and does not cheat. They would also expect their friend to do for them what they said they would do in order to be a friend. Team members said among the things they need to work on are: vocabulary, their times tables, self-confidence, self-control, and cursive handwriting. Peer pressure, as defined by the team, is when your classmates try to get you to do something you don't want to do. Also, pressuring you to do something you don't want to do to become a member of a clique.

WHAT I DO

In this cluster, team members said they do take part in group discussions, class discussions, surveys, and academic discussions. Reasons given for not cooperating with others included shyness, not liking to be told what to do because of thinking of themselves first, not wanting to sit down and do work, and because of just not wanting to. However, the team feels that they have worked very hard as a team to complete this project, and have learned more about cooperating and getting along with one another to accomplish a common goal. People that the team help are their mothers, teachers, friends, team members, family, and siblings.

WHAT I AM

Team members discussed whether or not they are truthful or honest. Most team members say they are. While exploring reasons why a person would not be truthful, one honest team member replied, "To avoid trouble." Other responses included: to be funny, to make other people look like fools, to be cool, and to hurt others' feelings.

WHAT I DO ABOUT WHAT I HAVE FOUND OUT

The importance of talking about one's feelings generated the following remarks: "You should talk about your feelings to relieve fear and anxiety," "Talk to someone when someone says something bad about you so you will feel better," "Talk to someone so anger won't build up in you," and "Talk to another person so you won't take it out on others."
