~*~~*Life In The 1800s*~~*~

In the blacksmith shop, the blacksmith heats the iron. He then hammers it into the shape he wants it in.

The men chop wood, get water, and they hunt. Women churn butter and cook food. They made dye out of berries and other sources found in nature. Each member of the family had one or two sets of clothing.

The log house had two floors, children slept on the floor in the loft. The parents shared the rope bed downstairs. The people had a trunk to keep their clothes in. The log house needed a fireplace because fire gave them light, heat, and warmth; it also allowed them to cook food. Things the people needed to surround the log house were good soil for crops, and trees for building the log house and for  firewood.

In school they have rules, they are:

1.   Obey elders.
2.   Speak only when spoken to.
3.   Idleness is sinful.
4.   Busy hand maketh a quiet mouth.
5.   Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
6.   Stand body tall to recite.
7.    Honor thy father and thy mother.
8.    Hold tongue when others speak.
9.    Give thanks for life’s blessings.
10.   Children should be seen and not heard.

The children had a strict teacher. They had to wear signs for discipline. Those signs were:

Idle boy/girl
Tongue wagger
 Nail biter baby

The boys usually dropped out of school. They only went to school three or four months out of the year.

The games children played were checkers, bone and stick. These games were handmade.
