~*~~*Naper Settlement Paper*~~*~

We visited Naper Settlement to see what it had for us to look at for our website. We found some things to look at that would tell us about the 1800’s.

The blacksmith was a good visit because in the story, Jessie’s father is one.  Blacksmiths make tools from iron. They use fire on the iron to make different. The final job is coating the tool with bee’s wax.

We also visited a typical house Jessie and her family would live in. It has one main room and a loft. The parents would sleep on abed in the main room, and the children would sleep on the floor in the loft. There were many trees around to make the log cabins. A lot of corn was grown there also.

The men’s job was chopping wood, and hunting for animals. The women made candles from animal fat. Most boys fetched water, and everyone only had two outfits.

We also visited the schoolhouse, which was very special because we learned a lot. The children had to recite 10 rules every morning. The teachers were very strict. There were many punishments you could get if you were bad! Before school, many children had to do farm chores. The children had to walk about 2 hours to get to school. The amount of children there would vary between 3 and 45.

We learned a lot about the 1800’s for our website.
