Plane Emergency

     According to the National Transportation Safety Board airplane accidents are divided into 4 levels. In a Major accident the aircraft was destroyed, or there were multiple fatalities, or there was one fatality and the aircraft was substantially damaged. In a Serious accident there was one fatality with substantial damage to the aircraft or there was at least one serious injury and the aircraft was substantially damaged. An Injury is when there is a nonfatal accident with at least one serious injury and without substantial damage to the aircraft. Damage is an accident in which no person was killed or seriously injured, but in which the aircraft was substantially damaged.

     Between 1982 and 1999 in aircraft that seat 10 or more passengers there were 68 Major accidents, 37 Serious accidents, 229 Injury accidents, and 218 Damage accidents on U. S. Air Carriers operating under 14 CFR 121. In these accidents 2224 passengers were killed. Another 371 passengers were seriously injured.
