     According to the National Hurricane Center the deadliest U. S. hurricane of the last 100 years was a category 4 hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas in 1900.  This hurricane took over 8000 lives. The second deadliest hurricane to hit the United States occurred in Lake Okeechobee, Florida in 1928. This category 4 hurricane took 1836 lives.

     In the last 100 years over 70,000 people have died in hurricanes.

29% of the losses occurred in the Greater Antilles

22% were off shore

21% were in the Lesser Antilles

16% were in the mainland United States

12% occurred in Mexico and Central America

less than 1 percent were elsewhere

   Hurricane Andrew was the costliest hurricane of the last century. Damages were $26,500,000,000. Hurricane Andrew hit Southeast Florida and Southeast Louisiana in 1992. Hugo was the second most expensive hurricane to hit the United States. Damages were $7,000,000,000. Hugo hit South Carolina in 1989. 

     The deadliest storm on record occurred in the Indian Ocean next to Banglasdesh. In 1970 this hurricane killed about 300,000 people. In 1991 Bangladesh was hit by another hurricane. This time 100,000 people died.
