Floods
occur when the rainfall is constant and lasts for a long time. Flash floods occur within a
few minutes to hours after the heavy, long rainfall, dam failure, or sudden release of
water held by an ice jam. Floods can roll boulders, tear out trees, and destroy buildings
and bridges. Mud slides may also become a problem with flash floods.
You
can do several things to be prepared for floods if you live at a low elevation. (See
disaster survival kit.)
Create an evacuation plan.
Know you way to higher ground.
Learn the warning signs of
flood.
Purchase flood insurance.
Own a raft or small boat.
Keep sandbags, plastic
sheeting, lumber, and towels.
Keep your car full of
gasoline.
Store drinking water - As a
last resort store water in bathtubs.
Store emergency supplies in
a high, dry place that is easy to get to.
Keep a stock of food that
requires little cooking and no refrigeration.
Keep first air supplies.
Keep a battery-powered radio
tuned into the emergency stations.
Be aware of what has
happened during past floods and take precautions.
Install check valves in
sewer traps to keep the water from backing up in the sewer drains.
Keep an eye on the weather.
