When an Accident Occurs If you are inside a building when an earthquake occurs take cover under a heavy piece of furniture. This should be away from an outside wall. Do not leave the building during the earthquake. If you are outside during the earthquake stay away from buildings, telephone poles, and other tall objects. Stay in the open until the earthquake stops. If you are driving your car when an earthquake occurs stop quickly, but do not leave your car. Be sure to stop your car away from buildings, trees, overpasses, or telephone poles. Once the shaking stops avoid bridges and ramps that may have been damaged by the earthquake. Be prepared for the aftershocks of and earthquake. These are smaller than the earthquake, but can cause damage to the already weakened buildings. Aftershocks can occur up to a month after the quake.
