Earthquakes occur suddenly. To avoid serious injury plan ahead. You can make your home a safer place by :

  • Fastening shelves securely.

  • Putting large objects on lower shelves.

  • Storing breakable items and weed killers, pesticides, or flammable products in low closed cabinets with latches.

  • Hanging heavy items away from beds, couches, etc.

  • Bracing overhead light fixtures.

  • Repairing defective wiring and leaky gas connections.

  • Securing your water heater to the wall.

  • Repairing cracks in ceilings or foundations.

  • Fixing heavy tall furniture to the wall.

  • Placing beds away from windows.

Know the safest place to be in each room of your home. This could be under a sturdy table, desk, or kitchen counter. Stay away from windows, mirrors, and pictures. Heating units, fireplaces, stoves should also be avoided. Be sure you are a safe distance from tall cabinets, refrigerators, or bookcases that could fall over.
