Severe
Weather
Before setting sail you should check the weather forecast. At times the
weather can change quickly. Here are a few signs to look for that indicate a weather
change:
- Watch for rapid vertically rising clouds.

- Note a sudden drop in temperature.

- Note sudden changes in wind direction or
speed.
|

If severe weather does occur
follow these guidelines:
Reduce speed. Keep just
enough power to maintain headway.
Put on your life jackets.
Turn on your lights.
Head for the nearest shore.
Head the bow of your boat
into the waves at about a 45 degree angle.
Keep Bilges free of water.
Passengers should sit on
the bottom of the boat near the center.
Anchor the boat if
necessary.

Staying Afloat
If you fall overboard follow
these guidelines: |
Remain calm.
Do not try to remove
clothing or shoes.
Keep on your life jacket.
Keep your knees bent.
Float on your back and
paddle slowly to safety.
Hypothermia
Falling into cold water can
cause rapid, uncontrolled breathing, cardiac arrest, and a number of other serious
conditions which can result in drowning. To survive in cold water follow these steps:
Try to keep as much of your
body out of the water as possible.
Keep your head out of the
water. Fifty percent of heat loss is from the head.
If you must enter cold
water follow these rules:
Wear a life jacket.
Button up your clothing.
Cover your head if possible
and enter the water slowly.
Keep your head out of the
water.
Assume the H.E.L.P.
position.
