Activity 1

Brian runs across a bear in the raspberry patch. Brian does not panic because he had learned about bears at the zoo. Learn more about bears. Add a page about bears to your survival guide.

     American black bears, brown or grizzly bears and polar bears live in North America. Although they weigh only 1 1/2 pounds when they are born, bears grow to be from 300 pounds to almost 2000 pounds. Bears eat ants, insects, salmon or trout, bark, plants, roots and berries. During the winter months bears heart rate slows so they can hibernate. Bears will wake up is the weather is warn or they are disturbed.

Activity 2

A porcupine attacks Brian inside his shelter. Learn more about porcupines and add this to your survival guide.

     A porcupine is a rodent wiht long, ponted spines that grow on its back and sides and from its head and tail. The spines or quills are sharp and have hundreds of barbs. The porcupine looses its quills easily and can throw them like arrows or darts.

     Porcupines live in the wooded areas from Alaska to the northern part of Mexico. They grow 26 to 31 inches long. Their bodies are covered with brownish hair whcih conceal quills that are 2 to 6 icnes in length.

Activity 3

Raspberries - Brian finds a raspberry patch. He considers this a real treat after eating the sour gut cherries.

Enjoy making something from raspberries. Here is one of our favorites.

Raspberry Cobbler

Melt 1 stick of margarine in a deep dish. Beat 1 cup sugar, 1 cup self-rising flour, and 3/4 cups of milk until smooth. Pour this batter over the melted margarine, do not stir. Wash and drain raspberries. Pour these into the batter and sprinkle with 1/2 cup of sugar. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes. Serves 6.
