MEDIEVAL WEAPONRY
| Hand Axe |
Normally carried as a secondary weapon, the hand
axe was a good, fast fighting weapon which required no great skill or strength
to use. It wasn't as effective because it was so light. |
 |
| Bastard Sword |
Also called the hand and a half sword, this was
a European sword used primarily in the late 14th and 15th centuries.
The Bastard sword is long, with a straight blade and an undecorated grip.
The grip was not the size of one or two-handed swords, but about one and
a half hands, so it was not typical. This is why is had such an unusual naem. It was used for thrusting and
wielding. Later the Bastard sword became the executioner's sword. |

| Morning Star |
The Morning Star was almost identical to the
ball and chain mace. The only difference was that the Morning Star
had a spiked ball for striking. The increased force of impact upon
the target was very effective on armored and unarmored opponents.
By adding a chain, the momentum was greater and stronger on impact. |
 |
| Voulge |
The Voulge was a primitive weapon used mainly
for pruning trees. Usually attached to a wooden pole, the Voulge was used
for thrusting and chopping. |
 |
| Short Sword |
The Short Sword is any bladed weapon that is
longer than a dagger but shorter than a long sword. The length and the
lighter weight of the weapon made it more effective in close-quarter fights.
Some warriors used the short sword as their primary weapon. Warriors
that used it as a secondary weapon were mainly archers and spearmen. |
