Homes
Kathy Kelly,
president of Enchanted Lake
Association
Enchanted Lake (Kaelepulu Pond) is a popular
place to live in. It has many
affordable homes and also expensive lakeside
residences. The pond (water portion) is now only 79
acres large, compared to 280 acres when it was an
ahupua'a, and is still being filled to make room
for more homes along the lake.
Recreational
Use
top
The watershed is used for
recreation such as water and land sports. Some
people that live along the lake have small barges
that they can use any time of the day. Some people
even have lunch or dinner on their barges, or just
enjoy a peaceful ride. Canoeing and kayaking are
also popular water sports. Children and adults can
enjoy fishing and crabbing during their spare time.
If you're lucky, you may be able to catch a Samoan
crab or even a barracuda in the lake! In our
watershed we have two big playgrounds and even a
private golf course.

A great way to spend the
weekend!
Dumping
area
top
Unfortunately, Enchanted Lake
(Kaelepulu Pond) is being used as a dumping area
and a drainage site for the people in the
watershed. Yuck! People who live on the lake throw
plastic items, soda cans and other pollutants into
the lake. There are about 40 storm drains that lead
directly into Enchanted Lake. People don't realize
that many of the items they use at home end up in
the lake. There has also been some illegal dumping
of trash. Some people even drain their swimming
pool water into the lake! People often forget that
our lake has an opening
to Kailua Bay. So if the
water quality is poor in the lake, it can also
affect the water quality of Kailua Bay.
Flood
Control
top
The lake still serves as a flood
control for the community. There is some fear,
however, that the lake is getting very shallow
because of the serious problem of siltation (soil,
rubbish buildup).

When there is heavy rain,
this is what the lake usually looks like.
