Our nation's wetlands are faced with an enemy called "urban sprawl". Kaelepulu Pond is an excellent example of how urbanization converted our marshland to an urban community. Methods of draining (removing water), dredging (diverting the water) or filling of wetlands were used to provide land for a golf course, housing and recreational use. In addition to "urban sprawl", another major threat to Kaelepulu Pond and other wetlands in Hawaii is the introduction of plants and animals often referred to as alien invaders or exotic species. |

Now if you think this is bad news, Hawaii has been estimated to have less than 10% of their wetlands remaining today! |
