once found in great numbers in Enchanted Lake (Kaelepulu Pond) are now on the endangered species list? |

Hawaii's native animals have been disappearing rapidly. The main reason is that of loss of habitat due to urban development and alien invaders. The alien invaders are introduced species that compete for space and food with our native species. Feral (wild) dogs and cats are also alien invaders to our wetlands. Cats and dogs hunt and eat birds. Other alien invaders are the apple snail, mongoose, and other rodents. The mongoose eats the eggs of the birds or the young birds themselves. The rat also steals and eats the eggs of the birds or the young birds. Kaelepulu Pond has many introduced ducks and geese.
