Did you know that it takes 14 months for the Pacific Oyster
to grow up to three inches?

The Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas) are found in Kaelepulu Pond. They used to be a popular gourmet item for many residents. People no longer pick them as a food item because of the polluted water. The Pacific oyster is dirty white or gray in color and the shell is very course. It can be found attached to cement walls.

It was introduced in Hawaii around the early 1900s as a gourmet food. It is a native of the Japanese islands. The Pacific Oyster's growth is continuous throughout the year, and it takes approximately 14 months to produce an oyster that is big enough to sell.
