Did you know that moss cannot get its own food. It makes food from the decaying matter that it grows on?

One particular plant that you can find a lot of in moist damp area is the moss. The club moss is common in Hawaii and has short thin stalks and small leaves. The club moss can be seen sticking out of a tree, rock or anything it's growing on. When moss does not get the required amount of water it needs it turns brown and appears dead.

There are more than nine thousand species of moss growing on all types of things. Some mosses have little branch like stems (filaments) growing out of them which have star shapes and are thick. It makes food from the plant or decaying matter that it grows on. Moss are important because they store minerals and other nutrients.

Many of our wetland fish depend on the moss as a source of food.
