Did you know that the uala was used to cure asthma,
as a gargle for throat sores and for fish bait?

The uala (Ipomoea batatas) or sweet potato has dark green heart-shaped leaves connected to vines that grow along the ground. The tubers are usually colored purple, white, or orange. The flowers are pinkish-lavender and look like small morning glories.

The sweet potato also has many uses. One use is food. The sweet potato can be baked, boiled, or steamed. It can also be used medicinally. Uala was used as a tonic during pregnancy. Dead vines and leaves were used as padding for mats, and hogs used the vine for food.

The sweet potato can be found growing in drier areas that are usually not good for taro. It could also be found in low lying areas up to five thousand feet elevation.
