Did you know that 'awa was used to
help get rid of migraines and to cure a cough?


The 'awa grows from four to twelve feet tall. The 'awa's flower is a small yellow-green spike. The leaves of the 'awa are heart shaped. The stem is made of wood. The branches grow sparingly and are thin. When the wood is wet the awa wood is soft, but as it dries it becomes hard.

Did you know that the 'awa was used as a medicine to help a
person become tired or drowsy and it helped a sick child to
go to sleep after chewing on an awa leaf?

The 'awa had many medicinal uses during the ancient Hawaiian days. To cure a cough the ancient Hawaiians would make a drink from the root. The ancient Hawaiians believed that the 'awa could cure many types of pain. After a hard day's work many of the Hawaiians had sore muscles, so they made a drink from the awa that relaxed their muscles.

The 'awa can be found growing wild in the valley and in areas with little sun and moist soil.
