Did you know that migrating sanderlings were found as far south as South Africa?

The sanderling (Calidris alba) also called the Hunaki in Hawaiian is both a shorebird and a wetland bird, but is always found along the water's edge. This bird is reddish in spring, and light gray in the winter. The sanderling's call is a sharp, distinctive plink. The sanderling lays from 4-6 eggs at a time. The chicks will hatch approximately 32 days after being laid.

The sanderling is also a migratory bird. They leave the breeding grounds by early September, and return there by mid-March to mid-May. The sanderling's diet consists of of animal matter, such as arthropods, small mollusks, and other invertebrates. If food is scarce, the sanderling may depend on plant life as food.
