The horseshoe crab lives off the east coast of North America and some parts of Asia. It is a rare animal. In Japan, in the sea between Shikoku and Honshu Islands, and in the north part of Kyushu, you can see the horseshoe crab. It is 60cm long. It has a sharp, curving tail. It has a scary head, like the old Samurais' hats. The horseshoe crab has been living in Japan for 20,000,000 years. Its body looks the same as it did back then. How has the horseshoe crab been able to live for such a long time ?

Answers:
1) Because it lives in the mud, at the bottom of sea. In this way, enemies can not attack the horseshoe crab easily. Also, although the outside and sea climate might have changed a considerable amount, beneath the sea, in the mud, there has been little change. And thus, the horseshoe crabs' habitat has remained the same.
2) The horseshoe crab does not need to eat very much. It can live for over half a year without eating.
3) The horseshoe crab lays a few hundred eggs, and hoards them in several different places. In this way, the survival rate of the eggs is higher.

     Now, there are very few horseshoe crabs. The sea is dirty and the coasts are becoming more built up with buildings and factories. Thus, the breeding places for the horseshoe crabs are becoming scarcer. In Okayama prefecture and other places we are trying to save the horseshoe crab and improve nature.
