| On the afternoon of February 23, 2001 artists from The Ghost Dispatch met to explore the book How to Draw Ghosts, Vampires and Haunted Houses. This how-to book has step by step instructions that explain techniques for drawing many types of scary pictures. | The thirty-two-page book is available from the Scholastic Book Club. Our artists selected four images from the book and followed the instructions to see if they could make their drawings like the drawings from the book. Here are the results from their meeting. |
The Headless Ghost of Ann BoleynThe Headless ghost of Ann Boleyn, the second wife of Henry the 8th of England, is said to haunt Hampton Court in London. To draw her ghost, first copy the outlines below on to black paper. Make your outline the size you want the finished picture to be. I thought drawing the figure was a little hard at the beginning. After I got past the first step I thought it was easy. This was a fun activity to do. I enjoyed drawing the picture. I drew on black paper. After I sketched it in pencil I went over the lines with white water color. |

Ghost from Ancient ChinaHeres a short history of this Ghost in Ancient China. Murdered people were said to return as ghosts, appearing from a shapeless cloud and surrounded by green light To draw this picture first copy the outline. Go over the finished outline with thin green and black ballpoint pens. Drawing the figure was hard at first, but after I stoped following the instructions, it became easier. It was fun. The water paint worked very well. The liquid slid up and down the paper, it was funny to watch. I felt kind of bizarre since my ghost has no chin and only 4 fingers. I liked my drawing when I finished. Its so cool. |
Scottish KelpieThis ghost is called a Kelpie. According to Scottish Legend, Kelpies persuaded unwary travelers to ride them across a river. Once on a Kelpies back, travelers were unable to get off and the kelpie would drown the rider. The instructions said you could copy or trace the picture, then color it with colored pencils. Use black and purple to draw the outline, and to add details to the face and coat. Use a mixture of colors to shade over the top of the outline. The Scottish Kelpie was easy to trace but when I started to color, the pencil lines that I used to trace the horse faded under the color pencil. I outlined it with a black marker to bring back more detail of the body. |

Pirate GhostThere are lots of stories about people who have had violent deaths and returned as ghosts. Unable to rest, they are reported to haunt the scene of their death, like the pirate I drew. Drawing the pirate ghost picture was a little hard because there were many intricate parts. Also, I had to go over the whole picture with different colors of chalk and I had to do lots of shading. Next I smeared the chalk to give the picture the ghostly effect. Drawing The picture may have been difficult, but it was fun. |
