Argus

Argus is a 100 eyed monster.   The goddess Hera told him to watch over the maiden Io who had been turned into a white cow by Zeus to be safer.  Argus watched over with Io with at least 50 eyes at one time.  Zeus sent Hermes to get past Argus and save Io.  Hermes played on his flute to try to make Argus go to sleep.  When Argus finally fell asleep, Hermes killed him when all of his eyes were closed. Then he set Io free. After Argus died Hera took all of his eyes and placed them on the Peacock. The Peacock is sacred to Hera to remind her of her faithful servant Argus.
