National Statistics

Unfortunately, the need for organs and tissues continue to grow. Currently, there are over 75,000 people on the National Waiting List and 16 people die each day awaiting a life-saving transplant.

Here is a breakdown of the National Waiting List by organ:

heart
4,000
lung
4,000
kidney/pancreas
2,000

1,000
heart/lung
200
intestine
200

At the end of 1990, 20,481 people were on the national list. Since 1990, the that list has grown at least 10% each year. At the start of 2000, about 66,000 people were waiting for an organ. At the end of that year, 2/3 of those people were still waiting. Out of those who are on the list, over 6,000 people die waiting each year for a life-saving transplant. In 1999, 21,960 transplants were performed of the 60,000+ that were on the waiting list. Sadly, the need for organ transplants is increasing, but the amount of people who donate remains relatively the same.
