Small Whorled Pogonia

The Small Whorled Pogonia is a small woodland orchid and only has one flower.  The flower is yellowish-brown and set above a whorl of leaves.
The plant prefers sandy, open, and dry deciduous woods.  It is found in both young and mature woodland areas.

Reason for the species decline in population:

The Small Whorled Pogonia has decreased because of loss of habitat.  In the past, it was taken by collectors but this threat has decreased because the species does not survive in cultivation.

Protection:

Heritage programs in West Virginia have been instrumental in preserving habitat. Because it does not occur on federal land, it receives no direct protection from federal management.  Its habitat is not protected by state laws.
