Northeastern Bulrush

The Northeastern Bulrush is a tall plant with many leaves.  It can grow up to 47 inches long. It has a cluster of brown flowers with no petals and the flower is surrounded by six barbed bristles which make it easy to identify.  This plant is a perennial, and  it prefers the small wetlands in West Virginia.

Reason for the species decline in population:

The wetlands this Northeastern Bulrush need to survive have been drained for developments.  Changes in the water table can destroy this plant.

Protection:

Efforts are underway to protect the Northeastern bulrush where it is growing and to search for new populations.  The cooperation and support of private landowners and public land managers is being requested.
