Nervous System

This web page is about your nervous system. It includes information about what parts are in your nervous system, how it works and other things. You will learn about the brain, spinal cord, nerves and how messages are sent. Go ahead read it.

Your nervous system is the main part of you. It’s what helps you do everything. Your nervous system allows you to write, pick up things or even read this website.

Your brain is the main part of the nervous system. It weighs 3 pounds and is grayish-pink. Did you know that your brain helps you keep your balance? Your brain has two parts, the left side and the right side.brain.jpg (48881 bytes) The weird thing is that the right side of your brain controls the left side of your body and your left side of brain controls your right side. Did you know there are over 100 billion nerve cells in your brain that are micorscpic! OK, enough with the brain lets go on to learn about the spinal cord!

Your spinal cord is 18 inches long but it is only as thick as your finger. Nerves go all though you’re spinal cord. Your spinal cord runs down the middle of your back and connects to your brain stem.

The nervous system is separated into three parts. Your central, automatic and peripheral. Your central nervous system has your brain and spinal cord. Your nerves are like phone wires sending millions of tiny electrical nerve signals. Do you know what your thinnest nerves are? They’re in your toes and fingers.

A pulse of electricity sends messages. When you touch something hot such as a pot that is on the stove the pulse of electricity moves along the nerve to the brain and makes your hand release from the pot. Along the way the pulse of electricity hits a synapase and has to jump to the next nerve. A synapase is a millionth of an inch.synapse.jpg (58929 bytes)

Do you want to know about the disease called Multiple sclerosis that effects your central nervous system? Well if you do read this. The word sclerosis comes from a Greek name skleros. If you have Multiple sclerosis your eye would start to shimmer or your vision would get doubled. When that is going on for a long time you could develop Multiple sclerosis 2 to 15 years after the fact. Scientist don’t know what causes Multiple sclerosis but I know they will find out.
