Destruction of the Amazon Rain Forest
By Whitney

Destruction of the rain forest is very serious. Brazil has the greatest of all rain forest losses. They average 12.5 to 22.5 million acres a year being destroyed. This destruction is because of social and economic factors.  Human actions are the primary source. The population of tropical areas is growing because of a need for firewood and farmland. The world needs paper, lumber, and other forest products. The forests are destroyed and causes us to lack even more products that grow there naturally. Only when the rain forest is gone will people fully notice that. By then, it will be too late for us all.
Wildlife is also the loser in deforestation and destruction. Many species become extinct due to rain forest destruction. Many species of animals are still unknown to man. Ninety-nine percent of all animals are now extinct. The estimate made by scientists is that in 60 years. The tropical rain forest will be gone completely. With the rain forest leaves its special products, beautiful landscape, and its animals. It also takes away a chance at finding cures for diseases. Scientists have recently discovered that in the two percent difference between man and chimpanzees, there is an immunity to cancer. This may help them discover how to cure and prevent the deaths of many people.
The loss of the forests may cause a change in the climate of the globe. Loss of forests creates loss of rainfall, loss of water in the Amazon River, loss of water in the Atlantic Ocean, and loss of oxygen. Much erosion and changing of land forms will occur. In 1989 Brazilians began a conservation program. There were 4 reserves set up in the mid 1990's that cover 8351 square miles. Conserving the use of paper and wooden products could help. Recycling and reforestation would also help. Always remember, one person can make a big difference.
