Cods measure from 18
to 39 inches long. They weigh from 10 to 11 pounds. They have large heads with very long
dorsal fins which are divided into 2 or 3 sections. They have a fleshy barbell on their
chin for touch and taste as well as finding food. They live in both northern and southern
hemispheres around the colder areas. The Antarctic cod is usually light gray and lives
near the surface near drift ice at the edge of a polar ice cap. The females lay from
500,000 to 5,000,000 eggs depending on their size. |
