Ohio "The Buckeye State" became the 17th state on March 1, 1803. Mining supplies about 1% of total state income with coal as the largest source. Natural gas is the next most important mineral product, with petroleum ranking third. Ohio ranks number one in production of construction sandstone, and fifth in production limestone used to make glass. Salt is also mined in Ohio, and the deepest salt mine (around 2,000 feet) in the U.S. is near Fairport Harbor, near Cleveland. |
