"The Tar Heel State" became the 12th
state on November 21, 1789.
One of the Confederate States, North Carolina seceded from the Union May 20,
1861, and readmitted to the Union on July 4, 1868.
North Carolina has a large range of minerals, including precious stones. Major commercial mineral resources are granite, tungsten, lithium, feldspar, phosphate and mica.
