New Mexico "The Land of Enchantment" became the 47th state on January 6, 1912. New Mexico's major resources are uranium, copper, coal, oil, potash, gold, silver, and sand. New Mexico was the United States' biggest turquoise producer until the 1920's. But, other than small amounts of byproduct from copper mines, production is limited. The turquoise in the Burro Mountains, Little Hachita Mountains , and Guadelupe Mountains were all mined by prehistoric Native Americans. New Mexico mines produced the first U.S. "Persian" quality turquoise.
