"The Magnolia State" became the 20th state on December 10,1817. One of the 11 Confederate States, Mississippi seceded from the Union on January 9, 1861 and was readmitted on February 23, 1870.
Mississippi's major resources are petroleum and natural gas. Sand, gravel, clay and magnesia are important non-metallic minerals.
