"The Wolverine State" became the 26th state on January 26, 1837.

Michigan's major mined resources are iron ore, copper, oil and salt. It also produces cement, clay, gypsum, natural gas, petroleum, potash, salt, limestone, and Bromine.

Until the late 1800’s the Upper Peninsula was the largest producer of copper and iron ore in the U.S.  Both products are now mined less because the mines are deep and expensive to mine compared with the mines in western states.
