"The Land of Lincoln" became the 21st state on December 3, 1818.
Coal and oil provide about 2/3 of the state’s income from mineral
resources. Illinois is the leading
producer of fluorspar, important in making steel.
Other important minerals include gravel and silica sand used to make
glass bottles. Smaller amounts of
minerals include lead, zinc and sandstone.
