"The Heart of Dixie" became the 22nd state on December 14, 1819. One of the 11 Confederate States, Alabama seceded from the Union on January 11, 1861 and was readmitted on July 13, 1868.
Alabama's mineral resources are cement, limestone, marble, mica, salt, sand, gravel, coal, iron ore, and clay. But, relies heavily on its agriculture base.
