Rome had the best army in the ancient world. They were so successful because any
person who could afford a weapon was forced to be in the Roman army. The Roman army was made up of many Legions and
there were about 5,000 men in a Legion. Legionaries were the men that fought in the
Legions. The Legionaries carried a spear, a small sword, and a large sword. They wore a
helmet and a vest of mail. Later they started wearing lorica segmentata, or armor
made of bands of metal. The Roman Legionary were the most feared soldiers in the world. To
help the Legionaries were soldiers that were mainly archers and cavalry who were called
Auxiliaries.
Another part of the Roman army were Praetorian
Perfect. These men guarded the emperor but later on these soldiers began assassinating
the emperors themselves. The Romans last battle was fatal and they were finished off by
German tribes. A couple of Roman soldiers survived, but lots of German troops
survived also.
