Gearing up and Down If I were to turn the small 8 tooth gear which is turning the larger 40 tooth gear, this would make the larger 40 tooth gear turn slower but with more power. If I were to turn the larger 40 tooth gear which is turning the smaller 8 tooth gear. This would make the smaller 8 tooth gear turn faster but with less power.

For some constructions like the elevator you need to understand compound gearing. Compound gearing is necessary on the elevator to give the motor the ability to do more work. This is an example of compound gearing.
