Possum
Possums
live in Australia, New Guinea, and the nearby islands. They are not related
to opossums. Possums are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day
and are active at night. They eat blossoms, fruits, insects, and sap. They
have hand-like back feet that help them hold tree branches. Their fur is
black, brown, gray, tan, or white. There are forty species of possums.
One species, the bush-tailed possum, is about 500 millimeters long and
lives in eastern Australian cities. They are herbivores and weigh from
three to eleven pounds.
