British Women

During the American

Revolution

Flora McDonald recruited soldiers for King George III, in 1776.

Flora was from Scotland, with her husband Allan, and her son. One day the governor of North Carolina asked the Scots for support for Great Britain. This was a very unusual request, for the English and the Scots were old enemies. Flora rode through the town encouraging everyone to support Great Britain. Approximately 1,500 men agreed to help. They were on their way, but were stopped at Moores Creek Bridge. More than half was taken prisoner including Flora’s son and husband, but not Flora. She sailed to British-held New York and reunited with her husband and son.

Rebecca Shoemaker was a colonial woman who was a spy for the British.

Rebecca gathered bits and pieces of information and passed it on to the British. It took the government one year until they suspected her as a spy. After that she could never go back to Philadelphia without the governments’ permission.

Lorenda Holmes was another spy for the British.

Lorenda also gathered information and messages to carry to the British.

When the Patriots caught her, they warned her that she would be severely punished if she were ever caught again. She kept on spying for the British government. The Patriots caught her again. This time they told her to take off her shoes, and she did. Then they put her right foot in a shovel full of burning coals, and burnt her foot severely.

Anne Lee was an outspoken British Woman.

Anne Lee was a Christian woman. She had several religious visions and people told her that she was God in a woman’s body. When she moved to Albany, NY, she built the church, Church of Christ’s Second Coming. When the Revolution started, Anne called the Patriots un-Christian, for fighting in the Revolution. She convinced the colonists that the war was sinful. The Militias put an end to this, by putting her in jail. When she was released, she started again. The outrageously mad Militiamen stormed her home, knocked her down, and put her on a sleigh. The sleigh took her to a farm where she was stripped to determine whether she was a woman. They thought this treatment would stop her, but she kept on going.
