Appomatox


Date: April 9, 1865

Summary: The Union won this one day battle that happened on April 9th, 1865. Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant of the United States and General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate States were the main commanders here. Seven hundred people died.

This was the final battle of the Civil War in Virginia. Early on April ninth, the remainder of John Brown Gordon's troops and General Lee's Calvary had a formation in a line for battle at Appomattox Courthouse. Lee failed on his last attempt to reach his supplies in Lynchburg. He surrendered to Grant because he was surrounded on three sides.
