To Walk the Sky Path

by Phillis Reynolds Naylor

To Walk the Sky Path is about a family of modern day Seminole Indians. Abraham, Billie’s grandfather, told Billie about what happens if you walk the sky path. To walk the sky path you have to be honest and kind. Mush Jim, Billie's uncle, rescued a man from a plane crash. The white man does not want help from because they are Indians. A hurricane hit about a week after that. Billie stayed with his friend, Jeffery Miller. After the hurricane hit, the water rose and they had to move. They didn't like the place they moved to because of all the tourists. Mush Jim had to do a lot of work to earn enough money ,one of the things he does is wrestle alligators. Jeff comes to camp after the alligator wrestling and meets Sihoki , Billie's grandmother and Abraham. Sihoki does not want him in the camp because she does not like white people. Sihoki is the most prejudiced member of Billie's family. Billie's parents allow Jeff to visit.

Charlie, Billie's older brother, had never attended school so Billie began to teach his brother. Charlie learned his ABC's and what sounds they make. Billie's white teacher encourages Billie and gives him the materials to teach Charlie. Sihoki brakes her arm and is taken to the hospital and again Billie is facedwith his grandmother's distrust of white people.

Billie often asks Abraham for advice about how to manage in his "white school world" and in his "Indian world". Billie is often confused by the white's distrusts of Indians and Indians distrusts with whites. He sees goodness and kindness in both sides.

As the book ends Billie experiences great loss but also great hope. He knows that Abraham has lived a life that will allow him to walk the sky path and his goal is to be able to teach the white man what Indian ways are all about.

I like this book even though the end is sad because the grandfather dies at the end . I would recommend this book to you because it tells you a lot about the Seminole Indians and it helps you to understand the prejudice that people show.
