Roller Hockey

What Kids Say:

"Roller Hockey is fun because you get to skate fast, and you get to hit a puck.  And it is a challenge to hit the puck in the small net."
-Eric Smith, age 11, Santa Cruz, California

"It's fun because you get to skate, you get to get lots of cool gear, and you get to knock over the other players.  It's fun to be goalie and stop the puck. The puck is really fast so you need to keep your eye on it."
-Dean Potter, age 11, Santa Cruz, California

Comments from an Expert: Kent Shain, adult, Los Gatos, California. "I have been playing for about 3 years. Before that I skated just for fun.  It's a great sport for kids to get into when they are young. It develops good team skills and the boys and girls seem to have a great time."

How does this sport help your body?
Hockey is a great cardiovascular workout in addition to building stronger calf and upper leg muscles. Upper body strength helps in the sport but I don't think you develop any stronger upper body by playing.

How does this sport help you mentally?
Hockey like any team sport takes a lot of focus. You have to trust the other team members and know they will do their job. Hockey is more of a team sport than any other sport or game that I have played.

What sort of body type does a player need?
Most of the better players in roller hockey are less than 6' tall and built strong. Most lift weights. The taller players don't seem to be able to turn as fast or get up to speed as quick But when you get hit by the big guys it hurts more.

What are the dangers involved with this sport?
I think the worst danger is running into another player and breaking a rib or a shoulder. Also getting hit by a puck or another stick happens sometimes. Twisted knees can be a problem, but not very often.

What equipment do you need to play this sport?
Skates, shin guards, hip pads, elbow pads, helmet, gloves and a stick  Total cost about $500 for good equipment.
