As you may be aware, many different things are polluting local rivers and streams.  Here is a report from the Governor with more info on this story...

"Yesterday morning I had a phone call from a concerned citizen from the town of Narragansett saying that the estuary near her house was slowly turning a blackish color. Another person called saying she noticed that there were not as many birds as usual in the area. People are also saying that there is garbage all over the place. I have had several calls from concerned citizens complaining about these same issues.  We need your help to clean these rivers. If you would like to help, you can contact the governor’s office at 792-1234 or visit our website at www.rigovernor.gov "

Thank you, Governor, for that information.  This just in on a related note!

We are receiving reports from the Coast Guard that a barge has just run a ground off the coast of South Kingstown, RI.  The tugboat pushing it caught fire during the severe storms we are witnessing right now.  The barge was carrying 828,000 gallons of heating oil, which spilled into the bay endangering local fishing grounds and the habitat for marine life and birds.  It is too early at this point to say what the long-term impact of the spill will be.  Stay tuned for further updates as information becomes available.
